hello all

I am not a new member but have not posted for a long time , been quite ill with other things besides my RA, I recently had blood tests done for my RA clinic and a few days later had a letter and new blood test form . They wanted me to have the blood tests repeated as the T P markers in my blood were elevated. Does anyone know what they are and what they mean.

can anyone help

Hi Sharon,

The words that came to mind are Total Proteins.

High blood protein may be caused by something as simple as mild dehydration, increasing the concentration of protein in your bloodstream.
In this case, the blood proteins only appear to be elevated i.e because your fluid levels are low.

As you have mentioned, you have been very unwell over the past few months and this would fit the picture
High blood protein may also be a warning sign of chronic inflammation or infection.

I think the latter part re inflammation would fit with RA.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gogs

Thanks for your reply, it makes sense now as my RA has been so bad lately , I have other health issues so treatment is limited for me, I am asthmatic so I can not have anti inflamatories, I can not take methotrexate either, I did try Humira an ant TNF but I had 14 infections in 18 months so I had to come off it. Then last year I was seriously ill last year with 4 large blood clots on my lungs, which has left me with lung damage so I will not be offered any other anti TNFs. I am only on pain relief which is Fentynal patches, paracetamol, oxycodone, and orimorph. I am in constant pain and just recently I have felt really tired and just very unwell . I am seeing a new consultant on 02/01/14 as my consultant left over a year ago and only now they have replaced him which is a disgusting to leave people like me with no consultant for over a year. I really hope that he will be able to suggest some treatment for me.

Thanks again

love sharon

Oh Sharon, what a terrible story, I'm so sorry for all you are going through.

You just make sure this new person hears your story, it needs listening to and acting upon. Your RA needs treatment and soon.
I too have damaged lungs, unfortunately from the RA, that puts me in the same position as yourself in that many RA drugs
are prohibited. I am at present on Leflunomide, Hydroxychloroquine and steroids. I only started the former drug six weeks ago, so
it's early days yet, but I too had one hell of a summer, thanks to intramuscular high dos steroids I'm managing OK at present and hoping that the new
drug when it kicks in will solve my pain.

Keep us posted and good luck for the 2nd January.ThumpUp

Good luck for 2nd Jan, at least it's only a few days away now.

I am like you - unable to take NSAID's so my pain relief is the opioid drugs - a similar cocktail to yours. Have you thought about acupuncture? It helped me a lot and in some areas you can get it on the NHS. The other thing to think about is a TENS machine. You can buy them for under £30 and they work on the same neural pathways as acupuncture. Neither of these will give you total relief but may help reduce the pain - they did for me. Also if your acupuncturist is a qualified physio then they may be able to offer you mixed sessions of acupuncture and massage - again I found that really beneficial

Hexham - Northumberland - Loads of spectacular walks - all I need now are the joints to go with them! :)
